Spring Boot security is one of the most requested features in the application. Security controls the user access page on the basis of the configured roles. In this post, we analyze this simple exception “At least one mapping is required (i.e. authorizeRequests().anyRequest().authenticated())” and how this exception can be resolved.
This exception occurs when the application is started. If the security module is configured for the spring boot application and the improper configuration of the authorization, this exception is thrown when the spring boot application is started.

Root Cause
If the spring boot security module is configured, the spring boot will configure security checks at the filter level. These filters are executed before any request is served by any servlet class. The SpringSecurityFilterChain class loads the filter chain on the spring boot. Configures the security authentication when the spring boot application starts.
If the authentication information is not configured, the exception will be thrown. As the SpringSecurityFilterChain is not properly loaded, the application can not start.
How to reproduce this issue
If the spring boot application is configured with the security module in pom.xml and security is customized by extending the WebSecurityConfigurerAdapter class, the authentication information is not configured, this exception will be triggered when the spring boot application starts.
The example below will reproduce this exception when the spring boot application starts.
pom.xml
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-boot-starter-security</artifactId>
</dependency>
package com.yawintutor;
import org.springframework.context.annotation.Configuration;
import org.springframework.security.config.annotation.authentication.builders.AuthenticationManagerBuilder;
import org.springframework.security.config.annotation.web.builders.HttpSecurity;
import org.springframework.security.config.annotation.web.configuration.WebSecurityConfigurerAdapter;
@Configuration
public class SpringBootSecurityConfiguration extends WebSecurityConfigurerAdapter {
@Override
public void configure(AuthenticationManagerBuilder auth) throws Exception {
auth.inMemoryAuthentication()
.withUser("user").password("{noop}password").roles("USER") .and()
.withUser("admin").password("{noop}password").roles("ADMIN");
}
@Override
public void configure(HttpSecurity http) throws Exception {
http
.csrf()
.disable()
.authorizeRequests();
}
}
Solution 1
In the above spring boot application security configuration java class, the authorization is not configured. Add the below configuration code will resolve this exception.
@Override
public void configure(HttpSecurity http) throws Exception {
http
.csrf()
.disable()
.authorizeRequests()
.anyRequest().authenticated();
}
The complete java class code is as below
package com.yawintutor;
import org.springframework.context.annotation.Configuration;
import org.springframework.security.config.annotation.authentication.builders.AuthenticationManagerBuilder;
import org.springframework.security.config.annotation.web.builders.HttpSecurity;
import org.springframework.security.config.annotation.web.configuration.WebSecurityConfigurerAdapter;
@Configuration
public class SpringBootSecurityConfiguration extends WebSecurityConfigurerAdapter {
@Override
public void configure(AuthenticationManagerBuilder auth) throws Exception {
auth.inMemoryAuthentication()
.withUser("user").password("{noop}password").roles("USER") .and()
.withUser("admin").password("{noop}password").roles("ADMIN");
}
@Override
public void configure(HttpSecurity http) throws Exception {
http
.csrf()
.disable()
.authorizeRequests()
.antMatchers("/", "/home", "/guest").permitAll()
.antMatchers("/admin/**").hasAnyRole("ADMIN")
.antMatchers("/user/**").hasAnyRole("USER")
.anyRequest().authenticated();
}
}
Solution 2
If you still have issue in spring boot security, please follow the below step by step procedure to fix the issue
